Hi Jason,
I like your site!
Apart from hockey and cricket, people of Goan origin
have represented Tanzania in international tournaments
such as the All-Africa games in sports like badminton,
table-tennis, squash and weight-lifting.
One particularly gifted athlete, Tony "Chick" D'souza,
captained the national squash team and the hockey team
at the same time (mid-1970's). He also was a top
badminton player.
In the early sixties, several Goans played soccer for
Tanganyika in the "Gossage Cup." That tournament
served as the premier soccer tournament in East
Africa.
We have also had international referees in soccer and
hockey. Also the long time Secretary of the Tanzanian
Tennis Association was of Goan origin.
I know a Tanzanian Goan currently playing professional
golf in the USA.
Kenyan and Ugandan Goans have similar success stories.
In the mid-1980's our club field hockey team in
Tanzania hosted a team from Malawi that had at least
two Goan brothers playing for the Malawi national
team.
