Many a time people are quick to vouchsafe their opinions without bothering to
study the facts. Had Michael Vaz (Mopa Airport is inevitable, Herald April 4th)
done his homework, he would have been aware that the International Civil
Aviation Organisation expert report commissioned by the Government of Goa, has
clearly stated that Goa’s air traffic projections do not merit a second
airport. The report clearly states that one airport is the best solution for
Goa. Hence can Mr. Vaz explain how Dabolim will continue as usual once the
private airport of Mopa is operational?

As for limited land space, he should ask the Chief Minister who was vigorously
opposing as Leader of Opposition, the handing over to a commercial builder of
Sy.8/1, Dabolim, earmarked for cityside facilities of the airport, the reason
for his inaction, despite a letter from the Defence Ministry to the State
government expressing grave security concerns. Since Michael Vaz is so
concerned about national security, this might be a very good issue for him to
take up with Mr. Parrikar’s government. Also GFDO has said that they met the
Flag Officer Goa Area, who said that the Navy had parted with land for previous
expansion of Dabolim Airport, and was willing to part with more land for
further expansion, but the State government has not formally requested for it
so naturally, they could not give what was not asked for. So much for limited
land of Dabolim.

As for the Navy being shifted out of Dabolim Airport, it is not the people who
scream for it, but a present Cabinet Minister from the Parrikar led government
who has gone on a public platform exhorting the people to unite and get the
Navy out of Dabolim airport. Perhaps it is now time for Michael Vaz to get his
facts straight and start questioning his government rather than throwing stones
randomly with no aim, direction or constructive purpose in mind.
