The media coverage of the Goa elections ensured that the ill-effects of mining which are many, starting with the destruction of our water sources, was completely ignored by the media commentators, interviewers and the election candidates too.
This was particularly evident in the TV coverage by the Goa channels. Discussions started with the presumption that the stopping of mining was bad. Even when some candidates did make a point that there were other stakeholders in the mining controversy who were being affected it was either drowned out or I suspect edited out. I can understand the mining and media barons who want to project this line but I would have thought that the journalists and at least some of the candidates who are also Goans would have understood the danger of what they were doing.
