Mickky Pacheco's attack on Priests/Church unwarranted. He must extend apology:
GSRP

Politicians from the Christian community should refrain from throwing barbs
against the Priests and the Catholic Church for its 'Secular' stand taken
during the Lok Sabha 2014 Elections, opined Goa Su-Raj Party.

Nuvem MLA Francisco 'Mickky' Pacheco's statement against the Priests and the
Church is derogatory and therefore, unacceptable. He must apologize to the
Church and the Catholic community of Goa at large, expressed Savio Rodrigues,
Secretary & President (Youth Affairs), GSRP.

"There is an apprehension about 'Modi' amongst the Christian minority and this
is a proven fact that cannot be denied. The Catholic Church's focus on
'secular' candidate/s appear/s to have been an anti-Modi stand and that arises
from the fear that the minority/s are nursing about Modi as the Prime
Ministerial Candidate. Numerous priests that we have spoken to, have expressed
their apprehensions and the need for 'secular' candidates. Some even supported
the Congress candidate from the Catholic minority community in South Goa
because they reasoned that the real fight was between the national goliaths viz
the BJP and the Congress. That the Regional Parties [like GSRP], though
appreciated for their distinctive and clear secular stand, were expected to
stay out of the Lok Sabha race, primarily not to bring about the divisions of
votes , is unfortunate", Rodrigues expressed.

"We exercised our right as a political party. As citizens of this 'SECULAR
DEMOCRATIC NATION' , we took part in the elections knowing fully-well that the
Church was tilted towards the Congress. Though GSRP has kept religion, caste
and other considerations out from playing a role in electoral politics, the
party agrees with the directives given out by the Church to its faithful to
vote 'SECULAR', though GSRP wonders if the common man actually knows the
meaning of the word 'secular' .

Since GSRP has been built upon an absolute 'secular' foundation , it believes
that a religious institution, having an opinion on electoral politics, thereby
influencing its followers and faithful, is at best an opinion of the concerned
institution, its leaders and therefore it is left to the followers/faithful to
follow or reject that opinion. If people start voting based on religious
opinions, there could be a stage when religions will divide the electoral
masses. However, GSRP does not agree with the criticisms emanating from Males
against religious leaders or against religious institutions. Therefore, MLA
Mickky Pacheco must take a corrective step and apologize," elaborated Rodrigues.
