On 26th May while Narendra Modi will be sworn in as India’s Prime Minister, in the cosmopolitan Vasco town the BJP by its brute majority will high-handedly oust the firebrand social activist Tara Kerkar who just over a week ago was elected as the Chairperson of the Municipality. Tara Kerkar is clearly a victim of the NaMo effect and her only sin is not having supported the BJP candidate in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
In a further gross abuse of power the BJP government is reportedly contemplating amending the Corporation of City of Panaji Act to make a provision for moving a no-confidence motion so that the current Mayor of Panaji Surendra Furtado can be hounded out. All this does not augur well in a democracy where positions of power cannot be the monopoly of one political party. I would appeal to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to act like a statesman and desist from supporting such petty ill conceived moves to destabilize local self bodies. Let us hope this is not the beginning of “Ache Din Aane Wale Hain" that Narendra Modi promised India.
