Mumbai: City based think-tank Mumbai First is collaborating with Police
Reforms Watch, Delhi-based international human rights organisation Commonwealth
Human Rights Initiative and the NGO Public Concern for Governance Trust to
organize an interactive discussion on 'Better Policing for a Safer Mumbai'. In
the run up to the Maharashtra state assembly elections in October, the
discussion aims to bring the need for people-friendly policing into sharp
focus.
The discussion will touch upon concerns relating to the recent Maharashtra
Police Ordinance, the Supreme Court order on police reforms and its
implementation in Maharashtra, Police-politician nexus, safety of women and
policing, police abusing its powers, police refusing to lodge complaints,
improving police-citizen interaction, community policing, communal violence and
police response and security and terror. There will be an interactive session
in which concerned citizens will be encouraged to share their ideas and ask
questions of the panelists on this subject matter.
The event will be held at the BSE International Convention Hall in Dalal Street
on Wednesday, 4th June at 5.30 p.m. The panelists for the event are Dr. Jacob
Punnoose (IPS) Former DGP of Kerala, Julio Ribeiro (IPS) Former Commissioner of
Mumbai, Brijesh Singh (IPS), DGP Punjab and Former Indian Ambassador to
Romania, and Maja Daruwala, CHRI Director. The conversation will be moderated
by Kumar Ketkar, veteran Journalist and Former Chief Editor, Loksatta.
