Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diktat to all his Ministers to declare their assets and liabilities and that of their family members by 31st August every year is a step in the right direction. But instead of these records gathering dust in the racks of the Prime Minister’s office, it would be prudent if the assets and liabilities including that of Narendra Modi himself is uploaded on the PMO’s website for public scrutiny. It would be an appropriate move towards transparency and openness in governance. It may be proper to ensure that the assets and liabilities are set out by way of an affidavit so that any Minister making a false declaration could be penalized.
Why not also make all the MP’s declare their assets and liabilities annually. It would be one of the indicators whether the MPLAD funds are being judiciously spent without any kick-backs from the contractors. Prime Minister Modi could also prevail upon the State Chief Ministers and Ministers to similarly annually make public their assets and liabilities. He could start with Goa where some Ministers over the last two years in power have acquired huge mind boggling assets. The tale of Goan politicians moving from rags to riches has today become a rule and no longer an exception. None of those who have tasted power over the last few years will die as paupers.
