The increasing occurrence of diabetes mellitus in India is a matter of concern. There are currently 382 million people with diabetes worldwide- and one out of every 6 people with diabetes is an Indian! Annually 1.5 million people die of diabetes worldwide- making diabetes into one of the top ten leading causes of death. In addition to death, diabetes leads to heart attacks, blindness, kidney failure and foot ulcers. The increasing occurrence of diabetes is thought to be related to obesity - which in turn results from dietary excess and a sedentary life. Looking at the seriousness of the disease, The CII Goa, under its CII Life Sciences & Healthcare Panel along with the Diabetes Society of Goa conducted an 'Interactive Session on Diabetes' on 21st June 2014 in Panjim- Goa. Dr. A G Unnikrishnan (MD, DM, DNB, MNAMS), CEO and Endocrinologist, Chellaram Diabetes Institute, Bavdhan, Pune was the speaker and Dr. Digambar Naik, Vrundavan Shalby Hospitals Limited chaired the session. Also present at the session were Mr. Prakash Jalan, Past Chairman, CII Goa State Council & Mentor of CII Life Sciences & Healthcare Panel and Mr. Hemant Arondekar, Chairman of CII Goa Life Sciences & Healthcare Panel. Dr. A G Unnikrishnan stated that "The good news is that diabetes can be prevented. Exercising, even simple walking, for as little as 20 minutes per day can prevent diabetes. In addition a diet which I healthy, and has enough servings of vegetables- can go a long way in preventing diabetes. A simple test to diagnose diabetes is called the HbA1c test- this is available all over the country, and gives an average blood glucose level over the last 3 months. An HbA1c value that is more than 6.5%- suggests the onset of diabetes. Another bit of good news is that diabetes is treatable. A healthy diet, exercise and medications can help control the high blood glucose levels. In addition, regular (monthly) monitoring of blood glucose levels, either at a laboratory or by a home glucose testing machine (called glucometer) - will all help." He further added "Diabetes is called a silent killer. That is because diabetes silently affects the various organs of the body, till one day- the problems become too serious and evident- and by then it's often too late. For this reason, people with diabetes should have a strict annual check up to detect complications at an early stage itself. At that stage- the complications can often be halted with specific treatments. For instance, if diabetic kidney disease is detected early, its progression can be halted by simple, inexpensive and effective pills. People with diabetes should undergo annual tests to screen for diseases affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes and feet. With increasing economic prosperity and spending power, the dangers of excess junk food consumption, and a sedentary life will increasingly become obvious. It is time for stake holders to come together to tackle this dreaded disease. A focus on preventing childhood obesity and encouraging a healthy lifestyle are imperative- and this health message needs to percolate to the people of the entire country." The session saw a great participation and interaction with an objective to gain knowledge. 23rd June 2014 Panaji- Goa ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- Disclaimer This message, including any files transmitted with it, is for the sole use of the intended recipient and may contain information that is confidential, legally privileged or exempt from disclosure under applicable law.
