Very interesting article FN, thanks. In Toronto there are currently 9 brands of Madeira available to us of which one is oddly, Italian. They range in price from $16 to $42 for a 750 ml bottle.
North America accounts for 7% of all Madeira consumption (of which Canada 2%) and 11% in monetary value. I have found a fortified South African Paarl Ruby wine that sells for just $10, belongs to the class of Madeira, Sherry and Port, but is simply outstanding in taste and notes over the other 3. Everyone I have recoomended it to, thinks likewise. Although the best Port and Madeira is Portuguese, the best Sherry is Spanish. Canada being a leading new world wine country like the Napa Valley region of California, Paarl Valley of South Africa, Chile and Australia, makes its own port and sherry too, but unlike other wines which are international award winning, nothing to talk about, except for our Ice Wine which us unique, very sweet, but expensive, being made from grapes frozen on the vine and then plucked. This country has always liked wines but recently wine drinking has overtaken the traditional national alcohol - beer. Roland. Toronto.
