Every morning, goans are fed news about the football junket, rape case and bikinis. I hate to say this, but serious as there issues are, they are meant to divert the attention of goans from the issues that pose a threat to our very existence. The fact is, nobody will die if some mlas who behave like juvenile imbeciles. No one will die is you read about rape every other day instead of every day. No one will suffer is some neanderthal comments on bikinis. But people will die if magnesium levels remain high in the waters Seraulim. People will die if toxic dump remains in cuncolim and kundai. People will die if sewage continues to flow into Goan rivers like the sal. Why aren't papers like herald publishing demands about these issues everyday? Why aren't they demanding the gram sabha approved regional plan be passed? Why aren't they demanding a for a lokayukta in the state? You and I are being fooled everyday by some pro mining and pro construction lobby editors who are blinding us with trivia. Most papers have cosmetically changed their looks but I wish they changed their priorities towards what's important for goans.Wouldn't you want to know what's happening in goans sport associations? Instead, today's sports news included a useless article on the fact that Sharapova doesn't know who Tendulkar is. Do we really care? I don't and neither should u. The fact is till we set regional plan, lokayukt/ lokpal, police reforms., environment etc as our priority nothing will change. For that to happen we need to demand higher standards from our editors. After all, they are the closest thing we have to leaders of opposition. Coming back to the question, are goans being fooled? Yes. But that doesn't give us the right to pass on the consequence of our foolishness, our 25000cr debt and our poisoned rivers to the next generation.
