Somehow I remember we had all types of these imported oils bottles at home (My dad was tarvotti)
Col water? Yes, its cologne water I think I remember thin but tall bottle with silver wrapping all over. Sydney oil? We called it Sydney tel or siknni tel (What it could be?) I think it was a small 4 sided bottle, thick oil with strong smell. Our neighbours used it more than us (frequent borrowing) Few drops on pet's wounds (Pigs, dogs etc) would virtually flush out the maggots (kille) thus curing or healing the wound. Pigs? yes pigs , the wound caused by local surgical sterilisation or 'Copaz' I remember Turmeric paste was applied to the area post operation before releasing the pig or piglet. We also had clinical thermometer something that many did not have (except Tarvotti houses and Africa returnees). We said 'termamitor' Again, this was the most borrowed item by the neighbours to measure temperature or Zor (fever) Upto 100-102 was normal reading anything over it considered high fever. It was kept under one armpit or under his tongue for about a minute or so. Zor kitu zala? (What's the temperature/fever?) We simply said don, tin, char or Panch, meaning 102, 103,104, 105.. 4, 5 usually means 'call the doctor' For reading purpose, thermometer had English and Chinese inscription on it. To lower the temperature 'mitta golli' was applied. Cloth soaked in salt water and placed over forehead.. Pottak soro was also applied (fenni was applied to stomach) Ventoz We also had such imported cups (cupping therapy) Not many knew we had it (so no borrowing) We used to leave lit cotton inside each cup and then immediately attached to one's back (back pain etc) 10-12 cups. https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextras/4041064102/ Ajit or Ajut Even this item (apparatus for colonic Irrigation therapy) neighbours borrowed from us. We lent but minus beak. 'You use your own' which were available in the market. What's beak? Its a half pencil size tap with long beak (with stop cork) which directs or regulate flow of water into one's rectum Porpotteachem ajit or Potasachem ajut https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4970124831/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauktiatrcompetition/14373646771/ [email protected] for Goa & NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc
