Youth Day celebrations and World Goan Youth Jamboree.

The World Youth Day Cross is the most significant tangible symbol of World
Youth Day. Originally the idea of Pope John Paul 11, the 3.8 metre high
wooden Cross was built and placed as a symbol of the Catholic faith, near
the main altar in St Peter's Basilica during the Holy Year of 1983. At the
end of that year, Pope John Paul gave this cross as a gift to the youth of
the world, to be carried through the world as a symbol of Christ's love for
humanity.
"My dear young people, at the conclusion of the Holy Year, I entrust to you
the sign of this Jubilee Year: the Cross of Christ! Carry it throughout the
world as a symbol of Christ's love for humanity and announce to everyone
that only in the death and resurrection of Christ can we find salvation and
redemption."
His Holiness Pope Jean Paul II, Rome , 22 April 1984.
Since then, the World Youth Day cross has travelled far and wide - it has
been throughout Europe, the United States , Canada , South America and The
Philippines, to Poland and Prague , to the German Parliament and even to
Ground Zero in New York . It has been carried by commercial airline, light
aircraft, dog sled, pick-up truck, tractor, sail boat, fishing boat and on
shoulders. From parish churches to youth detention centres, prisons,
schools, universities, national historic sites, shopping centres, nightclub
districts and parks. It is truly an international symbol for Catholic youth.
...The handover of the cross, after each of the world meetings, has become a
"tradition," in the proper sense of a "traditio n ": a highly symbolic
handover, which must be lived with great faith, committing oneself to a
journey of conversion in Jesus' steps.
After visiting several countries in Africa, to manifest the closeness of
Christ and of his Mother to the peoples of that continent affected by so
many sufferings, the cross and the Marian icon will be received next
February in different regions of Oceania, and eventually travel to dioceses
of Australia, until it reaches Sydney in July 2008 . It is a spiritual
pilgrimage that involves the whole Christian community, particularly young
people.
(2) World Goan Youth Jamboree in Sydney in July- August 2008

To coincide with this great world event the Goans of Sydney Australia are
planning to host the first World Goan Youth Jamboree in Sydney in July-
August 2008.
(3) eGroup - Global Young Goans (GYG) International Network - to secure the
future of Global goans.
We invite all young Goans all over the world to join the GYG - IN.
All those who are interested can subscribe to an egroup to be known as -
Global Young Goans International Network . Members of the e group will be
kept informed through this network and discussions will also take place
