The recent incident in Varca, when tourist taxi drivers allegedly intimidated a Russian representative of a travel company, and demanded that she show them her travel documents is most unfortunate, but quite understandable given the total absence of rule of law in Goa. This is an issue that goes beyond a mere dispute between taxi drivers and tour operators. It is in fact a reflection of the government’s inability or obstinate refusal to inspire a sense of security in Goans by protecting their interests through strict implementation of the law. That is why the sleazy national and global underbelly is descending in droves upon our tiny Goa and carving out apparently impregnable kingdoms for themselves. If the government is soft on international and national lawbreakers, then surely, the message goes out loud and clear to vulnerable Goans that we live in a jungle where it is survival of the fittest.
