More about Daisy Rockwell here:http://www.daisyrockwell.com/ The grand-daughter of Norman Rockwell, she has a PhD in South Asian studies, and is an acclaimed translator from Hindi. Rockwell has written The Little Book of Terror, a volume of paintings and essays on the Global War on Terror (Foxhead Books, 2012), and her collection of translations of stories by Ashk, Hats and Doctors, was published in 2013 by Penguin India. Her novel Taste was published by Foxhead Books in April 2014. While she has held many well-received exhibitions in the USA, 'Odalisque' (a part of GALF 2014) will be the first time her work will be seen in India The figure of the Odalisque (from the Turkish word 'odalik', meaning 'chambermaid') was a prominent trope in nineteenth century Orientalist painting. The Odalisque was usually a reclining female figure, often nude or semi-clad in shawls or loose robes, meant to invoke Oriental decadence and opulence. Odalisque paintings both exoticised 'the East' and objectified women's bodies. This series re-presents the Odalisque as a subject who fully participates in his or her portrayal. Each painting is a collaboration between the painter and the subject, in which the subject sends the painter her/his pose and explains what it is meant to signify.
