*Surendra-bab, * *CCP MAYOR,*
*Why did you clean up the remains of IFFI? Are you a head of sweeper? It is the duty of IFFI's organisers. Money has been laundering where is not required. Parrikar or whoever is the authority of IFFI should have made the funds exclusively for cleaning operations after the IFFI is over. CCP is trying to be helpful so that the seat of MLA of Panjim goes to BJP and that somebody from Congress or Independent will surely jump.* *stephen dias * *WHO CLEANS UP AFTER THE PARTY IS OVER?* *It happens annually. The International Film Festival of India ( IFFI) ends and there is garbage littered all over the city, left behind by the festival delegates, the people milling around and the fair- like atmosphere that dominates Panjim for the 10- day- long festival.* *Clearing up the garbage is left to the Corporation of the City of Panjim that is tasked with the job. Vibha Verma reports* panjim residents woke up Monday morning to see mounds of garbage dotting the Mandovi promenade left behind by the International Film Festival of India ( IFFI) that ended on sunday. the promenade, opposite the Entertainment society of Goa ( EsG) headquarters that was the main festival venue, had some 50- odd food stalls which attracted over 5000 visitors – locals, delegates and tourists – daily. the Corporation of City of panjim ( CCp) that has deployed its staff to clean the area claims the city will be garbage- free by tuesday. panjim Mayor surendra Furtado said more than a dozen sweepers have been tasked with cleaning the promenade of dry and wet waste. A little more civic sense among those that thronged the area and there would not be garbage to segregate and collect from the area. “ We had placed at least four dustbins between every two stalls. our workers were present at the venues daily throughout the day to clear the dustbins regularly,” a CCp official said. sources said that a large number of the people did use the bins to dispose off their garbage, but some used the sidewalk as their dumping ground. According to officials there were at least 100 dustbins along the promenade and given the fact that the area was crowded throughout the evening, all these were very necessary. With the stalls now dismantled, some of the props that were discarded still remain along with the garbage and need to be taken away. Furtado asserted that the city will be cleansed of the garbage by tuesday and that the waste will be segregated and sent for treatment. CCp officials said that the Kingfisher Village just off the promenade that is an annual feature of the festival had outsourced its garbage collection. this garbage is to be handed over to the CCp for disposal. the CCp is yet to determine the exact amount of garbage it has collected during the festival but sources said it wasn’t an easy exercise ensuring that the festival venues were clean and tidy throughout the 10 days that the festival lasted.
