Dear Editor, Kindly give the attached press note and photos wide publicity.
Best wishes, Dr. Brian Mendonca Assistant Professor Department of English Carmel College, Goa *PRESS NOTE* *'The trick is not to noun / yourself into corners. /Water the plants. / Go for a walk. / Inhabit the verb.' -- this sage advice from her poem 'Strategist' came through in the sessions on writing poetry conducted by noted poet Arundhathi Subramaniam at Carmel College for Women, Nuvem, Goa on 2 December 2014 in the college. **The workshop for students of creative writing of the Department of English was conceived as an outreach of the Goa Arts and Literary Festival, 2014 in association with the International Centre, Goa.* *Welcoming Ms. Subramaniam to the college, the Principal Dr. (Sr.) M. Aradhana A.C. hailed it as a momentous event in the Golden Jubilee year of Carmel College. In a scintillating performance Ms. Subramaniam introduced herself and Bombay -- the place where she lives -- with 'I live on a wedge of land / reclaimed from a tired ocean / somewhere at the edge of the universe.' Among the many poems /poets she mediated to the students from Robert Burns and T.S. Eliot to Bhakti poetry, was her own poem 'Heirloom' on her grandmother. Students read their poems and were introduced to the nuances of tone and imagery. 'Allow a poem to breathe,' said Ms. Subramaniam. The workshop went a long way to demystify poetry for teenagers and refine their poetic practice. *
