The authorities need to be commended for ensuring the smooth arrangements for the recently concluded 44 day Exposition of the relics of Saint Francis Xavier.
However rigorous quality control should have been ensured in the entire newly created infrastructure. With some works still incomplete, sadly parts are already falling apart. We shall have a better picture after the coming monsoons. We all witnessed some of the similarly hurriedly put up infrastructure for the Lusofonia games washed and blown away last year. That the Exposition was scheduled for 2014 was known well in advance. But as usual for reasons now known to all, the authorities conveniently wait till the very last to hurriedly and haphazardly execute the works. This is a criminal waste of public funds as every paisa from the State exchequer has to be judiciously spent. and accounted for. There can be no guesses that the omnipresent joker at all major events Sanjit Rodrigues who managed to also get himself anointed as Exposition Commissioner must have not spared even this very solemn occasion to rake in the moolah through his inimitable modus operandi. Will the government let us know how much of tax payers’ money was spent on the Exposition. Could we also know how much was collected by the Church during this 44 day event which as per official figures over 50 lakh pilgrims venerated the relics of the Saint. There is need for transparency and answerability in all donations including that received by religious institutions.
