Jan 14-18, 2015: The Story of Light Festival (SOL)
has been conceptualized by a group of scientists,
artists and educators who believe that science and
philosophy need a common ground. The universe is a
magical place and its truest stories should no
longer remain hidden behind equations and
intimidating dialogues. We want to take the
conversation to the general public through art and
design. And we plan to do this by telling the
oldest story in the universe -- The Story of Light
-- from 14 to 18 Jan 2015 in Panjim city, Goa, an
ode to The International Year of Light!

  THE STORY OF LIGHT Festival

Bringing together 45 Artists and Scientists from 14
Countries, The Story of Light Festival (Goa, India) Creates a
Magical Playground for the United Nations International Year
  of Light 2015

The year 2015 has been declared The International Year of
Light and Light-based Technologies by the United Nations
(Light2015.org), and The Story of Light (thestoryoflight.org)
marks one of the first-large scale international events in
their calendar. SOL is also the first art-science-convergence
festival to be conceived and hosted in India.

The festival applies light -- its beauty and universality and
its connections with science, technology, nature, culture,
spirituality, history, and cosmology -- as a medium to shift
paradigms and perspectives. SOL will be held in India's
tourism capital of Goa from 14-18 January 2015, where nearly
100,000 tourists, students, and local residents will have
completely free access to everything from large-scale public
installations to curated screenings and mind-bending workshops.

The Story of Light (SOL) Festival (14-18 January 2015), an
initiative of The Story Of Foundation, is India's first
science-meets-art festival, being conducted in Panaji, Goa,
in partnership with the Corporation of the City of Panjim.

The festival curators, a consortium of scientists, artists
and educators, will showcase 45 public installations,
workshops, and performances from various parts of India and
around the world including Australia, Brazil, The Czech
Republic, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK,
and the US. These 45 projects will be built with the local
context in mind during a one-month pre-festival period
starting 15 December, 2014, where the organizers, artists,
and educators come together to co-create the festival
  experience.

Located across major hubs in Panaji, the capital of Goa, the
festival will transform the two-kilometre stretch from
Miramar Beach, to the Promenade, to Panjim Church into a
creative, entertaining and educational space. A children’s
area with unique and educational activities, a screenings
tent, and a concert stage will all add to the festivities.
The program presents visual play, dance performances,
installations with light and colour, photography workshops,
and live projections, all directed at teaching us a little
something about the universe in fun and interactive ways.

The festival is not-for-profit and completely free for all to
  attend. http://thestoryoflight.org/press-kit/

TRIBUTE TO A GOANETTER, DR RAMAMURTHY RAUT DESAI [by Dr
Francisco Colaco of Margao [email protected]

Dr Ramamurthy Raut Dessai died peacefully on 2 Jan, 2015. He
was the pioneer of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Goa. An
outstanding student, he obtained his MCh (Thoracic) with
flying colours as a student of the prestigious KEM Hospital,
Mumbai. When the whole world beckoned him he decided to
  return to his beloved Goa.

Those were the days when I had acquired my first Echo 2D
machine and the Salgaocar Hospital had started a
Cardiothoracic Unit at Chicalim. With the feedback I gave
him and with his own acumen and experience, despite limited
facilities, he performed with great success surgeries like
open and closed mitral commisurotomies, PDA ligations, ASD
and VSD closures, Coarctation repair and Valve Replacements.
He was so devoted to his patients that he spent night after
night at their bedside to provide them the best
post-operative care. Beneath a temperamental and at times
abrasive mien he had a compassionate heart. He never went
after money. He never overcharged his patients and his meagre
earnings were hardly a match to his hard work and commitment.

In his thirties, I happened to diagnose him to be suffering
of 'hypertrophic cardiomyopathy', something that had been
overlooked at the GMC and even at the KEM Hospital. He was
always grateful to me for having alerted him and took the
illness in its stride. He continued to work with the same
dedication, until, in the end, a couple of brain strokes had
him homebound. He became the Goa State IMA president, won
many awards and was felicitated as the most outstanding
doctor in Goa. He rose to the peak as a Rotarian and did a
lot of community service to the poor.

Dr Raut is credited for having successfully inserted the
first permanent pacemaker in Goa in a patient with complete
heart block. In his death, Goa has lost a pioneer of sorts
who always endeavoured to explore new territories and open up
a way for others to follow.

We mourn the tragic death of this stalwart and offer our
heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. --FC
