Nelson Lopes <https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]&q=from:%22Nelson+Lopes%22> Fri, 30 Sep 2011 20:58:36 -0700 <https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]&q=date:20110930> CATAO A FOOTBALL LEGEND Mr Caetano Fernandes, popularly known till date as CATAO, is a resident of Deussua Chinchinim ; He dominated the football field for many years As we remember, he played in forward position to every ones delight He was swift. accurate and most feared by his opponents and his name resounded all over the football arena in India He started his career by representing St Bosco`s High School ,Chinchinim and for 3 years in a row, lifted the Championship cup for the High schools in Portuguese Territories in Goa Due to unavoidable reasons and love for sports, he had to discontinue studies He lacked qualifications , and did not occupy higher position in the administration of the clubs he represented He donned the Salgaocar. colours for 3 years at a salary of Rs60-100. He was spotted for his agility and skills by Caltex, and contributed his best for 4 more years. His emoluments were Rs 300. Nd served the organization as a fitter/ Vasco Club noticed his dangerous, successful forays in the opponent camp and made an offer at Rs200.and served as a clerk. He accepted it , as it helped him to be near at home He played for 10 long years and captained the team. He represented then Bombay state and Goa in Santosh Trophy He played against Russia, selected by Bombay For all his contributions Govt of Goa has granted him sports pension. He was an inspiration for many a football enthusiast. At the ripe age of 74years he is as fit as a fiddle .He is simple and unassuming for his achievements The Chinchinim Villagers are really proud of their son and salute him A family of 3 sons and 2 daughters only one son played for Dempo for 3 years They realized that career in football was not worth it as a profession then, He is definitely one of the greatest footballers of his time in Chinchinim and carved his name in golden letters in the football arena of Goa and India Nelson lopes Chinchinim
