Dear Team and Friends, Re:Maharashtra needs an efficient and accountable police. The Maharashtra Police [Amendment & Continuance ] Act 2014 needs public debate and complete overhaul. Press Conference held on Feb 25 at Press Club: Media coverage and press statement attached The last government of Maharashtra left the people with one of the worst police laws in the country. The laws ignores every recommendation made by a half dozen committees over more than several decades. If that is not bad enough; it goes against the letter and spirit of the Supreme Court's 2006 directives, was made without any consultation with the public who are most affected by bad policing; puts the managerial functions like promotions postings and transfers firmly in the hands of the bureaucrat and politician and takes it away from the police; It cheats the public of getting local remedies against police wrong-doing; This law needs to be repealed. It must be done now. We have a new government. Chief Minister , Mr. Devendra Fadnavis, when he was a BJP M.L.A and President of BJP Mumbai had spoken out against the law when in opposition. In their manifesto too they had promised overhaul of such a regressive law.... Police and public deserve a better law to help them work together for a safer state. Maharashtrians need a police that is efficient honest well equipped with trained manpower. The police need to be motivated by having good management systems they can look up to, better working and housing conditions . Maharashtra Government must put in place a process of consulting with the people about the police that they want and only then bring about a law that will give them a police which is efficient, responsive and accountable. .The public of Maharashtra deserves nothing less. Mr CM Keep the Faith!!
