DIMAPUR INCIDENT IN NAGALAND

Two wrongs do not make a right. The citizens cannot take law into their
hands to seek quick redresssal of issues. The delays in judicial system
have eroded the faith and people have lost confidence and patience. The
irate mob of thousands freed him from custody and law enforcing agency had
to exercise maximum restraint, otherwise there could have been more
innocent tragedies. The lynching of the rapist, parading the accused naked
and finally killing him appears reasonable, quick settlement, primitive
justice system, an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth remedy

Rapes have not only become a common place but are occurring with regular
frequency . It is the rape victim who has to bear the brunt of ignominy of
social ostracising, loss of dignity and self respect and deep wound . The
whole process of filing FIR, recording evidence, examining witnesses,
pronouncing of the sentence is a tortuous, never ending process and finally
the rapist can get even away with shoddy evidence. It is a lifelong
sentence of exclusion and humiliation. What has ever happened to justice
Verma report after Nirbhaya case in point. ? What has happened to the 100
crores earmarked by UPA II for women security? Is the women security a
priority or do we hear ever increasing choruses of blaming the women to
restrict their freedom and inviting rapes due to their own actions ? Has
the revolt all over India against the most brutal rape stopped the rapist
from carrying on their escapades with impunity and without fear of law ?
The perpetrators of the most gruesome rape and attempt to murder are still
to meet the ends of justice in the incident of Nirbhaya and many other less
publicized cases, Is not true that many a rape victims have committed
suicides due to unbearable delays. The recent shocking of airing of video
denigrating Nirbhaya is a case in point adding salt to the wounds of
healing process,, The society soon forgets the agony, trauma and depth of
the pain of the surviving or dead victim and the family, because public
memory is short lived. There is growing sympathy for the accused to be
reformed. Death penalty is considered abhorrent and barbaric and is
universally condemned. It is true that death penalty has not stopped rapes,
but what are the statistics available to show reduction of rates, serving
as a deterrent ?.The centre to ward off public outcry for the failure of
machinery of law and order has immediately asked for the report. Did the
centre care to ask for the report of the act of the committed crime or its
magnitude in the first place The society and the Governments must rise
above petty rivalries and make women security and girl rights a priority.
The justice system should be quick and deterrent that will send a strong
message and those who dare will have to rue the roost
