Benaulim MLA Caetano D’Silva alias Caitu has to be commended for having vehemently opposed the current Zilla Parishad elections on party lines. Despite being a coalition partner of the government Caitu has had the spine to speak out against something that is vividly wrong.
Goa being a very small State, the holding of elections to local bodies on party lines will only ensure that the rot of party politics officially percolates to the very grass roots. The BJP government has gone very highhanded in holding these Zilla Parishad elections on party lines in such a haste without having the issue discussed in the Legislative Assembly. This March 18th stage managed Zilla Parishad elections is a sham of the highest order. The government has usurped the powers of the State Election Commission and even craftily carried out the delimitation and reservations of seats which was not in its domain. Does the BJP need to be reminded that we are a democracy?
