Interesting and readable article from Dilip D'Souza. However, he trips up a bit when he mixes up the assassins' motivational circumstances with regard to Indira Gandhi and on the other hand, Abe Lincoln along with the Mahatma.
In democracies, there will always be fanatical fringe groups or lone extremists whose cowardly acts will be celebrated by their supporters long after. That is the price of free speech and while there is no harm in countering for the sake of history, what they say, there is no cause to worry. Such is the case with Abe and Gandhiji. These historical heroes had no political or selfish motives. They did what they did for their nation or for lofty human principles. With Indira, it was a political price she paid. Her party encouraged the rise of Bhindranwale a violent Khalistani to counter the threat of Tara Singh and the Akali party to her own Congress party in Punjab. After Mr. B. was himself killed, the devils of violence were let loose, to be finally bottled by JFR, KPS Gill and the Indian Army. She was a victim of the long memories of elephants, in this case the Khalistani Sikhs. Not to say she earned it. There was much blame and many deaths on both sides. And then there is the recent ominous statement of Francis I that his papacy would not last too long. Is he ill? Is he unhappy with the burdens of the papacy, wanting to go back to his previous more simple life, or is he in foreboding of his own death at the hands of an element of the Curia as in the case of a recent previous pope who is widely speculated to be a victim of homicide. Like Mother Theresa is blamed for conversions, maybe he too will be blamed for not leaving the Vatican's corrupt affairs alone.
