Jagdish Bhagwati case suffers from the following infirmities: 1. He believes in the article by Rupa Subramanya in First Post as the gospel truth. Investigations are still on in all the cases and have not reached any conclusion. Therefore it would be premature to jump to any conclusions.
2. Trying to establish his credentials by narrating his various connections with the minority community is a bit facetious. Subramaniam Swamy who pours vitriolic abuse daily is married to a Parsi and his daughter to a muslim. Saeed Naqvi & Shahnawaz Hussain are married to Hindus but have to qualms in supporting hindutva causes against their own community.Zafar Sareshwala, a Bohri Muslim from Gujarat is one of Modi's strongest defenders. Therefore, this argument holds no water. 3. Bhagwati ignores the pattern in the violence - aggressive statements against minorities by various party and sister organisation functionaries, forceful ghar wapasi campaigns, burning of the Church in Delhi, desecration of the Blessed Sacrament and throwing of hosts on the floor, the attack on the church in Jabalpur, the destruction of the church in Hissar and placement of the Hanuman statue in place of the Crucifix, forcing a school in Chhatisgarh to place a statue of goddess Saraswati alongside the Cross. Forcing the children not to call the priest 'Father' but Guruji, Making Surya Namaskar mandatory in all schools. Diminishing Christmas Day by making it a working day and changing the name to Good Governance Day. Belittling the work of Mother Teresa. Disrupting christian prayer gatherings by making allegations of conversions.Banning beef which is a staple diet of muslims, christians, dalits, tribals and others. Besides these, there are numerous other incidents that keep happening all over the country but which do not get publicised. Taken in totality, I see justification in Mr Ribeiro's statement of anguish. I wish he had taken a balanced approach instead of merely batting for the government.
