Goa’s flashy Rural Development Minister Francisco Xavier Pacheco alias Mickky Pacheco has finally resigned. If he had the faintest respect for the law he would have tendered his resignation on March 30th afternoon itself when the Supreme Court summarily spurned his petition while upholding the High Court order sentencing him to six months behind bars.
Laxmikant Parsekar’s political impotency was displayed by his failure in not immediately dropping the convicted Minister from the cabinet. After that Supreme Court verdict, besides resigning from the cabinet Mickky Pacheco was duty bound to also immediately surrender and undergo that six month sentence. Since Mickky Pacheco is trying every trick possible to delay facing the wheels of Justice, the Bombay High Court at Goa will be moved seeking that a warrant of arrest be issued against him. Mickky Pacheco will have to begin undergoing the six month sentence at the very cramped Sada Sub Jail in Vasco but will soon be shifted to the state of the art new Goa Central Jail at Colvale which is scheduled to be commissioned in less than a month. However as that new jail has a 15 bedded indoor hospital, Mickky Pacheco will not get the privilege to feign of chest pain and sneak out to the comfort of the Goa Medical College hospital at Bambolim. But while undergoing that six month jail sentence Mickky Pacheco as an MLA will get some breath of fresh air and respite during the month long session of the Goa Legislative Assembly scheduled for July. Any MLA in jail during the session of the Legislative Assembly is entitled to attend under police escort and taken back to the jail after the day’s proceedings. The very hot-tempered Mickky Pacheco has been countless times on the wrong side of the law. During these six months behind bars for assaulting an Electricity department Junior Engineer Kapil Natekar he would now have to be at his best behavior. Or else he could meet his right match in jail which would only add further misery to his overflowing cup of woes.
