Thank you Con Menezes for an interesting link to a Time magazine article that 
referred to a Calcutta Jew who in turn referred to a prominent member of that 
community.

That person was Gen of the Army JFR (Jake) Jacob who was the main commander 
responsible with his clever planning, for the victory over the Pakistanis in 
erstwhile East Pakistan in 1971 leading to the creation of Bangladesh. He later 
became governor of Goa and of Punjab.

Look him up on Wiki, those who lived during those times.
