Dear Medical Doctors in Goa,
Whatever Dr. Francisco Colaco has written in Goanet today ( 24th August ‘15) about Dr. Fernando Rego is absolutely true and we will never find this kind of doctor having patience, zeal, and sincerity. Nowadays Goa medical doctors those who have done studies in English medium cannot be compared with him. I am of age 71 years old and I know Dr. Rego very much as my father had 9 children (2 boys and 7 girls) and most of them were attended by him (Dr,. Rego), a great Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He was living just close to my place at Portais and resident at St Cruz about 3 kms distance. I still remember him when he used to come to our place and check my sisters and step-mother for any gynecology problem, his treatment was excellent and always treated well. When he used to come I remember him and also Dr. Bhandari as we were supposed to help them to carry their medical bags and after the check ups I had to be ready with the water and towel in the veranda to give them hands wash. That was the special kind of treatment done earlier. Nowadays doctors who goes to their houses/residences first thing is we have to be ready to hand over money whatever they say, and that too not reasonable.. Olden type of doctors were known of their honesty, best ability and once they were called half of the illness was cured by the Grace of GOD, Nowadays people say bad words to nowadays doctors as most of them prescribe big list of medicines of their interested pharmacological laboratories or medical reps. advice, because they get their cuts or commissions. Also it has become a habit to these nowadays doctors to demand for pathological tests and advice to send to their known Path labs. for ulterior motives. This Dr. Rego was a Brahmin of great personality and I presume other casts did not get the opportunity to reach the doctorate level. Another Doctor to whom I knew was Dr. Emidio Afonso who was also an excellent doctor and I used to work with him in his laboratory called ( Laboratorio de Analisis) at Old Goa Medical College, with his Lab.Assistant Remijio Pereira who died recently. We both worked in his laboratory to do analysis as per his direction and one more doctor whom I do not remember his name. I also remember that Dr. Emidio who was Director of Health services, used to do research work in his own car ANGLIA parked outside the road side of GMC Hospital, and many times I was called to help him to connect battery connection for his prototypes projects in his car itself and also carry reagents and glassware. I have assisted him on olden times for instruments like glucometer, pH meters, Centrifuge, Ovens, and Spectro photometer etc, He has invented eqv. to penicillin drugs, calcium intravenous injections etc and this instrument were of help to him. Since I have studied electronics I could be kind of help to him, as well as in Lab Assistant work in pathology and bacteriology although I have not acquired any higher qualification in this field. Earlier I worked with Dr. Raman, Dr. Audi, Dr. Roque D'Sousa, and Dr. Susette. She is still working at JMM Porvorim doing her Path/Bact and Serological work. She was Head of GMC pathology and Bacteriology Dept., after Dr. Raman. She could be contacted as she will be happy to narrate all these incidents about what I have said. Others are not living. Let me mention here that Dr. Emidio Afonso’s children especially Dr. Bossuet Afonso are the best doctors known to me, and they can be compared almost to his father on sincerity, capability and in all respects. Hope this message is reached to all nowadays doctors who are enjoying their best placement in various private Hospitals in Goa but they cannot be compared with nowadays doctors. Dr Francisco Colaco came from the respected family from Portuguese time education and I found him the best and excellent sincere doctor. Nowadays both of us have taken keen interest in politics because of U-turn and corruption in full swing going on in Goa by politicians. Dr. Francisco Colaco is also the best and affectionate friend of mine. REGO THE DOYEN OF GOAN OBSTETRICIANS Message-ID: <243941830.8858507.1440325463024.javamail.ya...@mail.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 A TRIBUTE TO DR. JO?O FILIPE DO REGO (THE DOYEN OF GOAN GYNAECOLOGISTS) By Dr. Francisco Cola?o The medical professionall over the world is in a crisis and society no longer holds it in the high esteem it used to in the past. Honest doctors themselves confess that ethical standards among doctors are deteriorating in a downward spiral. It is therefore our duty and obligation to remember those stalwarts of yesteryear who served as role models and whose integrity, action and compassion in the field of medicine left a noble legacy for posterity. As we commemorate the hundredth birth anniversary of beloved Dr. Rego, an obstetrician and gynaecologist of the highest calibre, who died some years ago, we pay a handsome tribute to the man who lived his entire life with unrivalled passion, commitment and vision. He got his Medical degree at the Escola M?dica de Goa in 1938 which he completed with distinction and then went onto get his licentiate at the Faculty of Medicine in Lisbon. He did his post graduation in obstetrics and gynaecology atthe prestigious ?Maternidade Dr. Alfredo da Costa?, in Lisbon. He decided to return and give back to his beloved Goa all the knowledge and skills he had acquired abroad. He was appointed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Escola M?dica de Goa from 1952 until he superannuated in 1965. Thereafter he was the consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Cosme Matias Menezes Memorial Clinic till he retired from active medical life in 1990 at the ripe old age of 75 years. Dr. Jo?o Filipe do Rego was both an academician and clinician par excellence. As an academician, during his tenure as professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, he attended various international conferences and presented many papers. He was invited to England as visiting professor to the prestigious Hammersmith Medical School and Hospital, the London Hospital, Nuffield Hospital Oxford and the Queen Margaret Maternity. He is quoted in textbooks for diagnosing a tubal pregnancy even before rupture, a rare feat in those days when Ultrasonography was not available. He was the first to use the Goan frog?s urine for pregnancy testing acclaimed as a great discovery. As a clinician he had a vast experience. Even without modern facilities he innovated and tried new methods of therapy to save the life of his patients. The list of childless couples who were able to conceive after his treatment is endless. He was pained to see that he could not save many a pregnant lady dying of renal failure due to lack of a dialysis machine. This led him to motivate his colleague Dr. Em?dio Afonso to develop a dialysis machine indigenously. And lo and behold, the next pregnant patient of renal failure was saved by dialysing her with that ingenious device. Dr. Rego was a compassionate doctor who readily helped the poor in distress. He would never deny medical care to any patient that came to him. In fact his practice was largely humanitarian as half of his patients were not charged. He started, for the first time what was known as ?LACT?RIO? to procure milk for babies deprived of mother?s milk. He also started ?The Baby Trousseau? project wherein his students went about collecting funds to get baby clothes for the poor mothers. As a teacher and doctor he always strived to do his best. He was exacting and demanded optimum care to every patient. Even though he was strict and disciplinarian he was loved by his students and the staff of the hospital. He received many awards among which worthy of mention are the ?WHO scholarship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology?, the ?M.A. Heredia Award? at the inaugural session of the CREST conference and ?Award to Goan Senior Physician? by IMA in 1995, as a recognition for his remarkable contribution in the field of medicine. I was fortunate to come in contact with him for a long time. There were many traits in his multifaceted personality that impressed me. He was passionately involved in everything he did and very attached to his work. He was bold and forthright, a problem solver, a humane person who seamlessly bridged the gap in the teacher-student relationship. He was polite and accessible. Through the years, especially when he was at the helm of the Department of Obstetrics, he had a way of his own to combine professionalism with kindness. This is a rare feature since a lot of top doctors are known to short-change others. I also remember him for his enormous personal courtesy. He was extremely devoted to his family and despite his professional preoccupations, even when he reached home tired and exhausted, he saw to it that each of his five children were given quality time, received the best possible education and grew adorned with the tallest Christian virtues. But to him it was not only his family that mattered. He was kind to everyone and built good relations with people, from the highest to the lowest. As a student of his, like me, there are hundreds spread all over the world, who would like to join his family on this day to cherish the thousand-and-one golden remembrances of a man who with trust, hope and love lived his life to the full till the end of his earthly journey. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
