24thAUGUST: It is a great pleasure for me to share with you some history of my 
ownfamily, even though I am not a “Historian”:José Caetano doRego (?- 
12/10/1857) of Aldona & Anna Conceição Nazareth (d/o. ManuelNazareth & Quiteria 
da Costa, of Serula) married on 03/05/1829, and came tosettle in this Ward and 
house in 1847. Theyalso built a well at the end the side road which is called 
“POÇO DO REGO” and the road in front of thehouse was named as “TRAVESSA DO 
REGO”in the documents of the bygone ages. They had   three children:a.   
Antonio Sebastião (05.08.1833 -?) – Bachelorb.   Rita Maria Emilia  (     ?     
     -?) – Spinster.c.    Filipe João do Rego (who later changed his name to 
João Filipe doRego)–(21/03/1837- 28/10/1901) married Maria Benedita Celestial 
Simões ofColvale. (B:? 23/04/1892), d/o.Simplicio Simões & Anna Pelagia 
Batista. This couple had many children and theyoungest was born on the 17th 
February, 1887 (died on 09thJune, 1972) and was baptized in the Church of 
Panjim as ANTONIO AUGUSTO TOMEREFUGIO DO REGO. After doing his primarystudies, 
he registered himself in the “ESCOLA MEDICA DE GOA” and later was 
appointed‘Professor’ of the same.  In early 1914,his good friend and neighbour, 
EDUARDO MESQUITA, who stayed near the St. SebastianChapel of this ward, was 
related to the advocate and politician ROQUE CORREIAAFONSO of Benaulim, who was 
married to: “2 (XIII)-QUITÉRIA DACONCEIÇÃO CLAUDINA ÁLVARES PACHECO, nasceu a 
13/7/1867  em Margao,e faleceu a 23/4/1940, casou a30/1/1880 com João Joaquim 
Roque Corrêa Afonso, que nasceu em Benaulim, Salsete, a 10/6/1859, ondefaleceu 
a 27/3/1937”. They had had sixteen children and fifty four grandchildren!Five 
daughters happened to be married to Doctors and all called “António”,namely:

Cordeiro                Helenna      :António Augusto do Rego               
Margarida    : António Perergrino da Costa                                    
:Mariana...Amelia and Carolina were spinsters…And their foursons were:

Chico    FranciscoCoreia  Afonso             : Lucia HerediaEduardo 
Mesquitasuggested to his “primos” CORREIA AFONSO to have his friend Antonio, 
engaged tomarry their third last daughter called AURORA MARIA HELENA which the 
recordsregister in Portuguese as follows:“8(XIV)-AURORA MARIA HELENA CORREIA 
AFONSO, nasceu a 30/5/1896 e faleceu a 23/11/1953 casou em Pangima 22/11/1914 
com António Augusto Tomé do Refúgio do Rego, Médico pela Escola Médico 
Cirúrgica de Goa, aprovado comLouvor a 8/12/1913, Lente da Escola Médica de 
Goa, de quem houve duas filhas ecinco filhos”. She, liked her whole family, was 
baptised in the very same “PIABATISMAL” of the Church of Benaulim where the 
SAINT JOSE VAZ was and born inthe vicinity of their own home in the “PULVADDO” 
of Benaulim.That couple wasblessed with these children: João Filipe/Pisinha, 
Aires, Celestial/Gilbert, Fr.Aires Renato, Fr. Vasco s.j., Fernando/Aurea & 
Teresinha. The eldest JOAOFILIPE DO REGO was born on the 24th August 1915( a 
Tuesday), acentenary today! On the occasion of this birth, our grandfather 
ROQUE CORREIAAFONSO sent to him a sampling of the bread- fruit which is still 
alive in our compoundand today also celebrates its centenary! After his studies 
in the Liceu, hejoined the Escola  Medica and finishedhis course on 26.04.1938, 
and on 03.09.1939 went to Lisbon for further studiesand training  himself to be 
a gynecologist.
He achieved perfection for himself in Lisbon at the‘MATERNIDADE MONJARDINO’ and 
“MATERNIDADE ALREDO DA COSTA” &  returned on January 1948 as “Professor 
ofEscola Medica’., where our father had been and where his own daughter, Dr. 
Mimido Rego Silveira is now the HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRY.
During his carrier he deliveredmany conferences, etc., and received many awards 
but the main ones were:*    1948 ‑ "Hemorregia ‑ Inimigo No . I da 
Obstetricia". At theinvitation of the President of "Ordem dos Medicas da Indo 
Portuguesa",at Clube Harmonia, Margao, Goa, under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. 
Froilano deMelo.*    1949‑"Pre‑natal care in Obstetrics". Inaugural lecture of 
the AcademicYear of the Escola Medica de Goa.*    1950‑Addressed the Inaugural 
Session of the third "Congresso Luso Espanhol deObstetricia e Ginecologia" at 
Barcelona.*    1957‑ Addressed the Inaugural Session of the sixth "Congresso 
LusoEspanhol de Obstetricia e Ginecologia" at Coimbra (Portugal), presidedover 
by the Rector Magnificus of the oldest University of Portugal.*    1959 ‑ 
"Professor Alfredo daCosta ‑ Médico e Apóstolo. “Inaugural lecture of the 
Academic year, commemorating thebirth centenary of this pioneer in Obstetrics 
in Portugal.
*    1963‑Addressedthe Academic Session of the Escola Medica de Goa, dedicated 
to Dr. VithalNagesh Shirodkar, his personal friend in his visit to Goa. AWARDS 
RECEIVED*    W.H.O. Scholarship (Asian Branch) inObstetrics and Gynecology.*    
W. A. Heredia Award" at the InauguralSession of the CREST Conference, Bangalore 
(February 1994).*    1960: Under theauspices of the "Lisbon British Council" 
invited to England asvisiting professor & attended the Hammersmith Medical 
School &Hospital, the London Hospital, the Nuffield Hospital (Oxford), the 
Queen Margaret Maternity. At Oxford, invited by Prof.Chassar ‑ Noir to an 
operation of Uro‑Genital Fistula with his special method andsurgical 
instruments and post‑operativetreatment.                                   *    
As visitingprofessor to Paris, (visit sponsored by the PortugueseGovernment), 
invited by Prof. Lennorant, pioneer in Laparoscopy, and Dr. Velley,known for 
"Psychoprofilaxy of pain" and "Preparation duringPregnancy and Labour".On, 
Sunday, his family organized a get together offriends and relatives in the 
Marriott Hotel when a “Souvenir” was released,conceived and produced by his 
grandson ERIC SALDANHA. It carries many “Tributes”and one written by me at the 
request of his children (see attachment). It was s token of  gratitude of 
myself  and of my wife , because our four children –Arvind, Sunil, Waheeda & 
Vivek- were born in his hands at the ‘Cosme MatiasMenezes Hospital’ (Altinho, 
Panjim.) where he had a team of doctors to assisthim, led by Dr. Hugo Meneses 
and nurses led by the late Mrs. Madalena Bravo da Costa,a real ‘FLORENCE 
NIGHTINGALE” for the help and joy that she gave to the motherswho had just 
delivered , to the little babies and their fathers… like me.!On this occasion, 
thewell known cardiologist, journalist, musician and political activist who, as 
I visualizewill be one day the MLA of Margao as a successor of “Diggu Kamat”, 
Dr.Francisco Colaco. One of his pupils published an article which I send to you 
byattachment, in the “Goan Observer” and in the ‘Times of India’. Also 
anotherformer pupil of him, son of the well known late Dr Antonio Pinto do 
Rosario whowas the “PRESIDENTE DA CAMARA MUNICIPAL DE MAPUCA”, Dr. Sidney Pinto 
doRosario, son-in –law of Mr. Leopoldino Moniz of Benaulim, who one was 
myProfessor in the College of Agriculture-Poona, and nephew of my own 
colleaguein Department of Agriculture, the late Mr. Mario Pinto do Rosario, 
published anarticle in the Herald dated today which goes by the attachment.
