On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy 15th September GOACAN has launched a special awareness campaign with the theme "Space for Civil Society". The 60 days of activities under its "Making Democracy Work Campaign" will highlight the need for consumers to protect their civic rights and assert their participation in Democracy. The awareness activity will focus on raising civic issues in the forthcoming Municipal elections and will encourage consumers to prepare ward level manifestos so that all candidates pay due attention to the same during their election campaign. GOACAN will encourage consumers to understand their role in making the Municipal Councils vibrant. The campaign will highlight the need for various Committees to be set up in Municipal Councils under various Acts & Rules which provide for Civil Society participation, that all municipal Councils setup functional Websites where in all minutes, decisions & circulars are uploaded and they prepare their respective Citizens Charters by holding consultations of voters in collaboration with the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA). GOACAN will also mobilize Consumer Forum volunteers to motivate citizens to participate in the Gram Sabha meetings being held to prepare the Village Development Plan (VDP) by being part of the Village Development Committee (VDC) at the Panchayat level. This initiative will encourage citizens to understand the funding pattern of the Fourteen Finance Commission (FFC) and the devolution of powers that need to be implemented for Village Panchayats & Zilla Panchayats. -------------------------------
