Catholic organisations protesting against the play Agnes of God, that allegedly
was hurting its sentiments have postponed its protest and have also cancelled
their Sunday's prayer protest.A letter issued by the organisations written to
Senior police inspector of Bandra Police station says that the protest has been
postponed."Based on the assurances given by the police that an F I R will be
registered in the next few days the prayerful protest against the play 'Agnes
of God' has been kept on hold and today's prayerful protest has been
cancelled," said, Judith Monteiro, Secretary of one of the protesting
organisation.A prayerful protest is when people walk in protest carrying rosary
and singing hymns. The protest in Mumbai was a walk from St Andrews to Bandra
Police station, where at the end the protestors were going to handover a
bouquet of flowers to the police and ask them to register the complaint. The
Catholic organisation started a protest against the play, after the
advertisement of the play featured in a newspaper towards the end of September.
Post this the Catholic organisation even met the minority minister, Eknath
Khadse to stall the play, but then as it had a censor certificate, the minister
couldn't do anything.John Pielmeier’s play is based on the true story of a nun
who gives birth to a child and claims she is a virgin. The Catholic Secular
Forum (CSF) and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) had called for
a ban, arguing that it was an inaccurate representation of the clergy, who are
committed to a life of celibacy.'Agnes of God' was originally meant to open on
Monday at Sophia Bhabha Auditorium, Breach Candy, but the show was cancelled by
auditorium authorities on September 30.Post this, the show was finally screened
at NCPA on October 5.
