Usually its a 3 small plays or 'Partio', there was a time, where they even performed up to 6 plays at a time/place. each play would last around 1 hour. Band consists of Drummer, a Trumpeter and Sax /Clarinet and sometimes banjo Usually, they (actors) performed in the middle surrounded by the people (full circle). Inside, they too took places in circle. All of them would seat on the ground (as in Indian Toilet seat mode) and as and when their turns comes up, they will rise up. Eg. One fellow will knock at the door (saying 'O Ghora' meaning 'O House' which is equivalent to 'anybody home?'), he or she will rise up and the dialogue is between the two. All others are seated. To go to one house or place to another, small and typical music sequence was played indicating their movement or journey. No chairs, no table for the actors. Only the musicians used one bench. Majority of the people gathered there would also watch it standing. However, few benches were borrowed /arranged which were meant for benefactors or contributors. These benches would come from people houses, as each house had atleast one bench of av. 6 seater. They used to carry these benches on foot for upto 3 kms distance to the venue. Venue or mandd for such khell was fixed or traditional spot. Each such spot had it’s own name e.g. Ambddeakodde, Ambeakode (legend - such as name of trees, houses, person etc) Each play will start with an opening song called ‘imno’ All other singing was in voices (first-Second) and the songs related to the play performed. It’s like half the conversation though songs. Typical characters were of Bhatkar (Landlord), Mauxi (usually a wicked Aunty (male), Shett or Konknno (Hindu dress ‘puddvem’), Police, Balla or Sadhu etc. There were no females acting but men dressed as female. Some actors always did female role for which they were good at, year after year. Present day Tiatr (Konkani Drama)originated from this Traditional Khell. Beside, 3 carnival days, such plays were also performed on and after Easter for a week or two
