In simple terms nothing, and I dare say nothing of significance will change if the students are not called upon.** Just open case in point. just one and no other (research others) the Civil Rights movement. Some of you may remember the dogs sicced on the students, the water canons, and other paraphernalia of abuse.
** Similar and on a somewhat parallel note like when women get involved. The men now are simply ordered to be hammered. The women not always so, less so, and their presence when that is overwhelming stirs something across all strata including right up to the top including Higher police officials, administrators, advisors, politicians. Of course, even women are seen differently right down to what they wear or where they appear to come from. Appearances. These are complex movements of the mind, stemming and fueled by hatred, differences, indifference, following the political status, following orders, class and caste differences. Look up when the women in Manipur protested naked against the rapes by the Indian army. Of course, that may be over the top for many of you rank and file sophisticates. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0719-03.htm Now the link is intended to suggest desperation at the state of affairs to people hope that people will emphasize with their plight and to observe that the government does not appear to care. That itself leads to other shaping in the mind, and channeling of frustration. When students show their existential weight and concern, awareness and unity against flagrant violation which impact their families and their own lives, the order (status quo) in India will see a light thrown on their dissolution (the political debauchery). The pols must see in the youth, children who are like their children and grandchildren. Many of those involved in student protest, are brilliant. And, I am sure would embarrass the bejesus out of many of our Goans, and Goan origin kids in their smarts and brain power. Basically, your children and grandchildren. They are certainly studying and perhaps even better at making connects. People like Xanana Gusmao, Mandela, Guvera, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukdev (add Goans to the chain) were not weak in the head. But, do not be bothered about those who many not be taking their studies seriously. Well that is true of some, but really is that anyones concern? Indeed, very latitudinarian! —Venantius J Pinto
