I am in the uSA and hence will not be able to attend the Friday Balcao.However,
as a Niz goenkar, I care deeply about Goa. Hence my comments.and I don't want
to preach, as I know that there is a vast economic distance betweenthe USA and
Goa.Part of the reason why the Sulabh toilets are in such a filthy condition,
is becausethose who maintain the toilets have no idea what a clean toilet
should look like.So I cant blame them,as they clean toilets to their standards.
The people who supervise the ones who clean the toilets also don't have any
clue as to how to clean the toilets. Finally,the Government probably does not
provide the tools and the supplies needed to clean the toilets.Part of the
solution, quite obviously is to levy a reasonable charge for using the
toilets.How much is reasonable ? That is debatable. A system needs to be put
in place tocharge folks for using the toilets, and the revenue generated should
not only pay for cleaning the toilets, but also maintaining them, periodically
painitng them so theyremain clean and inviting, and provide necessities such as
soap, paper towels, andcleaning supplies.Several years ago I was at the Zurich,
Switzerland airport. the toilets were named"MacToilets" ( spin on McDonald's
restaurants I guess). The charge was one Eurofor men to urinate, 2 Euros to
defecate, and 2 Euros for women to urinate ordefecate. Steep ! But the
facilities were spotlessly clean and inviting. Female attendants wearing
white lab coats were in attendance. The floors and toilets were spotlessly
clean. As soon as one person used a toilet, an attendant followed withcleaning
materials and towels to wipe everything down. the floors were continuously
being swabbed clean, and were so sparklikng that I felt that one could even eat
anyfood accidentally dropped on the floor. There were no bad odours. I think
that they must not only have a super ventilation system, but the attendants
kept sprayingdeodorants. After using the toilet I felt that I got my money's
worth.
Now, India is a far cry from reaching this standard. But at least it is
something that we need to strive for even if it takes several decades. one
small step at a time.
