GOA Toronto
President’s Message

Well its that time of year again! How do we measure success over the past year?
Were we successful? Important questions that we need to refl ect on.
For seven consecutive years the Executive Committees have focused on
profi tability. For many valid reasons this was the correct strategy at the
time.
Over the past year, the G.O.A. General Body asked the Executive to focus
on giving back to the community, while still maintaining some degree of
profi tability that was not considered ‘taxing’ to the community. The G.O.A.
Executive committee took this direction to set a goal to reduce our focus on
profitability whilst allowing our net income to drop to what we considered
an appropriate level.

Even though we took the focus off profi tability, cost management continued to
be emphasized.
This change in direction posed a great challenge to myself as President, as in
previous years the corner stone of my vision was to build a solid foundation
based on strong fi nancial results and accountability. In an effort to give
back to the community during 2006, the Executive Committee focused on 3 key
goals:

• Budget certain events at a loss; or
• reduce ticket prices; or
• raise ticket prices at a lower rate then estimated costs increases.

The result of embracing these goals was that the net income of the Association
fell by almost 50 percent. To better illustrate this, Viva Goa, our flagship
event of the year, incurred an increase in costs of approximately $12,000. The
Executive Committee did not increase the ticket prices at the same rate as our
escalating costs resulting in a loss of $1,000, before sponsorship. The reason
I use this example, is it illustrates the impact from the third goal noted
above. I have chosen to specifically make mention of Viva Goa, as there are
members within our community who incorrectly assume that Viva Goa is a money
grab. It is important to see the full picture, as it costs approximately
$56,000 to run this event, and the costs continue to escalate. The challenge
faced by the Viva Goa
sub-committee, is how to best manage the cost increases, reduce pricing and
yet run a successful event.

As president, I believe it is important to continue to give back to the
community. To do so, independent of a Vision for the Association will only
result in short term gains. As we move forward, our emphasis will be to build a
sustainable vision. To build this vision, a special committee has been struck
to conduct this assessment with the Goan community. The purpose of this
assessment is to identify opportunities for how the Goan Overseas Association
might adjust its service offerings to provide increased value to its member
community. It will take the form of a survey, as well as an open forum with
the broader Goan community. The results from this assessment will help inform a
new vision and strategic plan for the future that will enhance the community’s
experience by identifying
and reinforcing areas of strength, as well as working towards improvement in
those areas where
difficulties are identified. It is very important for you to be a part of this
assessment.

Please share your voice by completing the attached survey in this issue
of the Pulse. Stay tuned for further updates of components of this assessment
at our events and on our web page.

My overall view of the past year’s performance is that we have achieved
our goals and, yes, I do feel we were successful. This being said, I will
reemphasize the importance of building a Vision that is sustainable for
years to come. If you want the Association to be around for the right
reasons, the only thing I ask of you is to be a part of this Vision.

culture and tradition through social, cultural, athletic, and educational
activities within the Goan community.
