GOVERNMENT PERMITS LED LIGHTS USAGE BEYOND 12 NAUTICAL MILES The minister of Fisheries Avertano Furtado issued guidelines to his department that the LED lights may be permitted beyond 12 nautical miles. There was a demand from the fishermen to use LED’s for fishing but the Government rejected their plea and now it is official that they cannot use the LED lights within the coastal waters.
There are also some complaints asking why other states allow usage of LED lights for fishing and not Goa? I feel that Union Government must come up with one ideology and issue a notification which is common to all the states of this country. Now, once the order is circulated to all fishing trawlers that they can go fishing using LED lights beyond 12 nautical miles, the question remains who will keep a track of this mileage? Will the Coast Guard or the Fisheries Dept keep a security vigil 24x7 to ensure that fishermen do not catch fish within the 12 nautical mile limit? Now if a fish wants to stay alive, it has to become intelligent enough to understand this boundary! Stephen Dias , Dona Paula Mob 9422443110
