PRESS NOTE Dated: 9-5-2007 With a view to curb excessive use of money during elections, the Election Commission of India has directed the State Authorities and Chief Electoral Officer to keep watch on distribution of goods such as Motor-cycles/two wheelers, TV sets etc. by the prospective candidates. The Director of Transport has reported abnormally high sale of motor-cycles/two wheelers in the last one week amounting to 700. Taking cognizance of this abnormally high sale during the election time, Election Commission of India has directed the Chief Electoral officer to file an FIR with Police Department Under Section 171-B of IPC for the offences of bribing the voters. Presently, the FIR will be filed against unknown persons, however, detailed investigations will be able to establish the linkage with the prospective candidates. It has also been directed that the investigations may be supervised by a Senior Police functionary at the level of Dy. Superintendent of Police.
