Selma: Has the Bangkok massage oil gone to your head? :)
Reply: Selma, are'nt you presupposing a couple of things there? Unless you know frederick well enough to know that he uses oil, (Bangkok oil) and more importantly that he uses it for his head!!!

Selma:
'Of course I have a romanticized vision of Goa. I even have a
romanticized vision of my husband of when I first met
him. .... :)'

Reply:
That goes without saying Selma! You can not BUT a romantic be, going by your writing here on Goanet. Good for you. But please, d'you still have that romanticized vision of your husband when you first met him? If yes, then you indulge in nostalgia, longing to live in the past that's gone.(doubtlessly a Romantic trait that!!) Has it that irreparably gone? If not, then you are likely to be a woman with 'adjustment patches' all over the quilt you call your life! You may choose to call it "Appliquéé" with a flutter of your eye-lashes, I have the choice to unceremoniously call it a rag!!! (No insult intended!)

Selma:
'When I was back in college, we had bullying, election
politics, drugs, unprotected sex and unwanted
pregnancies'...
Rep: Was your college in Goa? Miramar? Altinho? Margao? Because I knew many from these colleges who were happily indulging in "bullying, election
politics, drugs, unprotected sex and unwanted
pregnancies". That they did not want to get but ended up getting pregnant was soooo romantic, that some got pregnant repeatedly. Lure of the surprise element I suppose? As for bullying, Goa was nothing compared to universities outside. Even on the drug scene, Goa, even with its happy hippy interlude, was/is much better than many a campus elsewhere. Or do you need statistics? Goans have a laud voice ( I heard someone say laud-mouth). It is more the case of "char annyacho soro, rupyacho bobabatt!" which gives the impression that Goans are druggies and 'bebdes'; it is not true.
Selma writes:
'The point I'm trying to make is that while
man has always found a reason to hate, our ability to
translate that hate into large-scale destruction has
increased exponentially. '
Rep: your ref. here is obviously to the recent killings in one U.S.University, upon which you base your entire argument? But that's generalizing! One incident cannot show patterns. There are more examples of people doing good to fellow humans and animals today, because of media awareness. It is safer to say that we are better informed about everything today than in the past, that's all. But to draw conclusions from that is unwise I think. There is a strong play of relativity regarding the time flux. The last generation perhaps fought with our generation to keep the power equation tipped in their favour, just as we perhaps do in regards generation next. What has changed really? Can we say that the quality of happiness experienced by say a Dayanand Bandodkar was better than say a Dayanand Narvekar? It is also incorrect to presuppose that our happiness will be inferior in quality to the man of future. I don't suppose that happiness can be qualitative. That's the beauty of it. It is an aspect of The Divine Grace! And the Divine Grace has a absolute, and eternal vision. It is not segmented, for that is a convention of human mind.
Selma: 'The days when I would go shopping and the
most infuriating thing that would happen would be an
unsolicited grope from a Pathan, now seem like glory
days.'
Re: Now, now Selma, You the romantic DON"T HAVE TO GET SO CARRIED AWAY that you must confess enjoying, nay, Glorifying the groping by a Pathan's paw! "Infuriatingly glorious pawing by a pathan in the year 1969-70..?", shall we say?

Selma:
'Mark my words, the days of bombs and machine guns will
come to Goa too and then these days of shutters
downing will seem like the "days of innocence". Unless
mankind continuously seeks ways to ideologically keep
pace with technology, the potential for evil will
outpace that for good.'

Big Deal selma! Nothing can be uglier than when bell-bottoms became a vogue statement, particularly in Goa, when suddenly a million camel-toes began strutting about all over the place! We adjusted to the changes, didn't we? Why, we actually began to believe in pants! So, when what you predict comes to pass, we will similarly adjust. Your proposed solution will not work for Goa, nor for any place else. What we need is a shift in focus. Change in our consciousness is what is needed. The world is uniting. We are actually in the process of being "ONE WORLD", efforts are on at the spearhead level, and although success seems impossible, yet, HUM HONGAY KAAMYAB EK DIN"! But till then, nature has a lot of adjusting to do. There may be terrible upheavals, ethnic violence, fundamentalist wars, natural catastrophes (Global warming etc), malicious maladies which may make plague seem like common cold, and killing, killing, killing... It is the beginning of Mahakali's blow. She will demolish the old order to make room for the new. But till than, if romantics did not hang on to the past with all the force of their longing and aspiration, it may actually help accelerate the advent of the next evolutionary change, which is the only thing I can vouch for with some certitude.
Goddess bless!
