Death of Sr. Jyothishi of oddar Curchorem/Sancoale:
Was it really a suicide or a murder?

this was sent earlier... (Re: Goa's Suicide rate on the rise..)
Nun ended life at St. Estevan convent. (GT 2.5.07)
She was 36, found hanging from an iron rafter in a shed. The nun Sr. Jyoticy
Moraes (of Oddar
Curchorem) was working at Sancoale and had come to St. Estevam on Friday to
spend some time in
prayers. According to the police, the Nun went to a well and took out the
rope. She then
proceeded to a nearby shed and hung herself on Monday night of 30th April
2007. Police rule
out foul play at the moment and say that the nun could have taken the extreme
step probably
due to depression. (some info taken from death announcement ad,)

Was it really a suicide or a murder ?

I am reproducing below a correspondence received from the deceased Sr.
Jyothishi's brother
(with permission) hoping her family may get some justice.

Quote:
A nun from Holy Family convent was found dead in the premise of St. Theresa
Convent at St.
Esteves Zuvem old Goa, Another Collegue of her Said Sr. Jyotishi Moraes
committed suicide by
hanging herself to a rope at he nearby convent well. This is the first case in
Goa wherein a
nun has committed suicide by hanging herself. However the relatives of Sr.
Jyotyishi claim
this is to be a case of murder. As the body of Sr.Jyothishi Moraes was brought
down to ground
by the Convent authority without informing her parents or neighbor of the
convent and before
arrival of the Police.

According to the information given by Old Goa Police, Sr. Jyotishi was with her
colleagues.
The night before the incident took place. However on the early morning on 1st
may at around
5.30 am one of her colleagues found her hanging to a rope at the nearby well.
And without
informing any one they bought her to ground and latter informed the police of
Old Goa.

Suicide by gentle and peace loving sister Jyotishi is not a suicide but a case
of mental
harassment and murder claims the brother of deceased.
Sr. Jyotishi, a native of Hoddar, Curchorem Goa had completed 15 years in Holy
Congregation.
According to the family Sr. Jyotishi was both physically and mentally harassed
by the higher
authorities of the congregation. Sr. jyotishi had revealed this to her mother
and elder
sister. Sr. jyotishi had told her family members that the authority of the
congregation was
harassing her.
In a period of two months, Sr. jyotishi was transferred five times to different
places in Goa
as well as places outside against her wishes. However her family members were
never informed
about the transfers. Also Sr. jyotishi was instructed not to give any contact
numbers to her
family members when she was transferred to Hariyana. When Sr.Jyothishi was at
Usgaon convent,
locals demanded that she should stay in same convent but Sr. Jyothishi was
forcibly sent to
Hariyana. Sr. jyotishi had informed about this to her family members when she
had arrived
home on the eve of Easter.
On 1st may she was expected to come to her house on the birthday of her brother
Revols.
According to the police the nun must have committed suicide between midnight to
4 am. The
family members of the deceased were informed at around 10 am and told to come
to the convent
at Sancoale were no explanation was given to her family. From there they were
sent to St.
Esteves even here no explanation was given to her family and the gates of the
convent was
locked from inside and all the sisters of the convent were looking through the
gate of first
floor but no body came and explained the situation. But before the arrival of
her family at
the site body of Sr. jyotishi was sent to Goa medical college, bambolim for
Post mortem.

Apart from this two nuns who accompanied Sr. Jyothishi to St. Esteeves have
Resigned from the
community just after the incident one is from rassai lotulim now residing in
Assagao Mapusa
and the other one is from Belguam , Reason for their permanent resignation not
mentioned .
the nun from belgaum when asked whether she saw body hanging she said she
haven’t seen the
body hanging inspite of staying in the same convent she has'nt seen her hanging

Family and other well-wishers of Sr.Jyothishi Moraes Needs investigation and
explanation from
the Authority as well as Bishop about the same
