DEMPO REGAIN INDIA SOCCER CROWN Margao, May 15 East Bengal ended Mahindra's hopes of a title defense with a 2-1 victory at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata tonight and the outcome ensured that Goa's Dempo SC emerged 11th ONGC National Football League champions for the second time since winning their maiden title in 2005. Mahindra's defeat meant that no other team will be able to reach Dempo's magical figure of 33 points as the Goan club regained the NFL crown today itself with a match in hand. The outcome of their match against Mohun Bagan on Friday at Nehru stadium, Fatorda, would be thus rendered inconsequential. It may be recalled that Dempo had won their maiden NFL crown in 2005, beating Tollygunge Agragami in Vasco after Mahindra had put it across Sporting clube de Goa at Fatorda on that fateful day. However, Dempo have now won the NFL this time without actually being in action but have managed to inscribe their name on the coveted trophy with still a round's action remaining, which is very significant. Meanwhile, Dr Susana de Sousa, director of sports and youth affairs congratulated Dempo for winning the prestigious title for second time. "Dempo have proved once again that they are head and shoulders above Kolkata clubs. It is a big honour for Goa and Goans. Kudos to Mr Shrinivas (Baba) Dempo, coach Armando and all the players and support staff," she added. "Dempo's superiority in Indian football has been reestablished again and that too in no uncertain terms," remarked Mr V M Prabhudesai, SAG's executive director who added that Dempo have risen to the top by sheer dint of hard work and total commitment from Mr Shrinivas Dempo. "Goan football is the winner. Dempo are India's best without a shade of doubt. We have overtaken Kolkata to occupy the pride of place in Indian football," stated Mr Savio Messias, GFA's general secretary. "The Dempo House needs to be congratulated for their wholehearted support and Mr Shrinivas V Dempo, chairman of Dempo Group of Companies and president of Dempo SC needs to be commended for his genuine support and back up for the beautiful game, he added. Mr Gurudatta Bhakta, GOA secretary, the Sports Journalists Association of Goa (SJAG), Mr Dharma Chodankar, president of Softball Association of Goa, Don Bosco College of Physical Education, Mr C F Vaz, president of Goa Basketball Association, Mr Victor Vaz of Special Olympics Goa, Mr Lavinio Rebello GFA treasurer, Mr Kishor V Narvekar, president of Merces Club also congratulated Dempo on their superb performance. http://www.navhindtimes.com/articles.php?Story_ID=051639 ------------------------------------------------------- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era.
