Authorities identify sensitive spots in South

HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, MAY 16 — The authorities has identified 16 hyper-sensitive and
90 sensitive polling stations in South Goa district — Mormugao,
Salcete and Quepem police sub-divisions — for the ensuing Assembly
Polls.
Navelim constituency — which is witnessing a no holds barred battle
between Industries Minister, Luiziho Faleiro and his bete noire
Churchill Alemao — has record number of hyper-sensitive and sensitive
polling stations — around 11 hyper-sensitive and 12 sensitive booths.
Incidentally, the number of both hyper-sensitive and sensitive polling
booths in high-profile Benaulim constituency has come down to just two
and eight respectively this time.
The men-in-uniform apprehend group clashes between the supporters of
Faleiro and Alemao in certain areas such as Rawanfond-Shantinagar,
Navelim Junction, Varca, Rumdamol Housing board — the home for the
migrant floating population.
While in Dicarpale, the authorites feel that voters in the area are
poor and uneducated and could be influenced by money and alcohol, a
group clash between taxi operators supporting Faleiro and Alemao is
not ruled out in Varca.
Group clashes are also not ruled out in migrant-inhabited Monte Hill
in Margao constituency. Neighbouring Khareband is also declared
sensitive with some bad characters residing in the area.
Polling stations near the Betalbatim market is declared sensitive
since it is a stronghold of the sitting MLA and fears of victimisation
of the supporters of other parties. Besides, the area is thickly
populated and is of Christian community, the police say.
In Cuncolim, at least three booths are declared as sensitive since the
police do not rule out clashes between the supporters of local MLA and
opponents fighting against the industrial pollution.
The polling station at Cacora-Curchorem was declared sensitive since
people from Sanvordem, Cacora and Guddimol are know for trouble
making. Even for petty incidents, the people gather in large number
and resort to violence, the police say.
Chota Bazar polling station in Vasco sub-division is sensitive since
migrants from Karnataka and Andra Pradesh are residing in the
locality. These groups are slowly growing in number and are trying to
overpower the locals, the police said.
Polling station in Zuari Nagar is declared sensitive as usual, with
the police saying the area is notorious and a hub of migrants. Most of
the anti-social elements of Verna police station reside in the area.
Additional police is required to curb their activities, the report
says.
