------------------------------------------------------- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html -------------------------------------------------------
GOANET HIGHLIGHTS. By Cornel DaCosta Find out about a re-vitalised discussion on the issue of Creationism versus Evolution on Goanet. So many new thoughts are expressed on this issue that is currently sweeping across America and increasingly across Britain too. Are we ready for the debate and discussion? Following the production of the Goa Sudharop Goan Seniors E-Book, it is hoped that Goan Voice (UK) readers will access it at http://www.goasudharop.org/ebook/index.htm as well as make comments on the 'book' to the producer, Valerie Rodrigues at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personally, I think the concept and reality of such an e-book is excellent. Hopefully, readers of GV(UK) will be encouraged to make their personal contributions for future presentations in an expanded version of this e-book. There have been several outbreaks of communal violence and tension in parts of Goa to now make the issue of communalism a perennial one on Goanet. It is clear that this matter has to be taken seriously if communalism does not take permanent root in Goa. There is much currently written on this issue on Goanet following recent problems in Margao. An article titled Pitching for Peace (originally in the Gomantak Times, 14/5/07) provides much information on this issue, but equally important, are posts that query official views about this issue. Perhaps the place of cultivation and agriculture in Goa has featured much less on Goanet than one might have expected. However, an interesting and highly informative article titled Puri Sheti--a Unique Method of Cultivation by Bhiva and Costa throws much light on this theme. It tells us a very great deal about the vegetation, and especially, about the fruit that is distinctive to Goa. When Mgr Anthony Lobo, bishop of Islamabad--Rawalpindi says "I appeal to the world to help us in this dangerous struggle against fundamentalism" I believe that we ought to pay attention to the bishop's plea from Pakistan. From a long article on Goanet, we learn that Christians are threatened that, they must convert to Islam or die. This message is purported to come in a letter circulated to Christian communities that requires them to close churches and convert to Islam within a short deadline. The police think the letter is a hoax but others like Bishop Anthony Lobo are clearly extremely worried and treating the matter very seriously.
