The song was first sung by Ernest Ignatius Booy a Ceylonese Burgher although he was sometimes called "Anglo Indian" in the local press.
Vernon Corea who was a Radio Ceylon broadcaster when it ruled the air in the sub-continent in the 50s and 60s, was a godfather to young talent in Ceylon. He introduced Ernest Ignatius to Mignonne Ratnam of the Jetliners, a then upcoming band which soon became famous throughout India having visited Bombay on several occasions. Mignonne later became Fernando when she married the band's manager. Mignonne was a good musician as well as composer. Two of her original songs won international acclaim and her talent is partly what made the Jetliners so famous. One evening having met in a hotel in Colombo where both The Jetliners and Ernest Ignatius were separately performing, they sat, discussed their music and Mignonne gave birth to the lyrics of "I married a Female Wrestler" that was to make Ernest Ignatius famous, thanks due also to Vernon Corea who promoted it from Radio Ceylon. This was told to me by Errol Fernando in Toronto during a conversation a few years ago when I told him I was a Mignonne Ratnam and Jetliners fan.
