------------------------------------------------------- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html -------------------------------------------------------
<VISAKHAPATNAM: The Delhi team completed the calibration of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Visakhapatnam airport after four days of hectic schedule. The team returned to Delhi with their Dornier aircraft on Saturday morning. Sources said the ball is now in the court of Airports Authority of India and the Defence Ministry that has to give early clearance for the usage of new runway and ILS. With the construction of new terminal building and flood prevention work expected to be speeded up, air travellers are hopeful that their dream of having 24 hour flight operations including international routes with facilities of immigration and customs would be in place in the airport at the earliest. > http://www.thehindu.com/2007/05/20/stories/2007052008510300.htm <The Rs.70-crore project to save the Visakhapatnam airport from recurring flood damage, for which foundation was laid recently, would be of no use as the solution suggested by the consultants is like "prescribing remedy without knowing the malady," according to Visakhapatnam Consulting Engineers Consortium (VCEC). VCEC secretary S. Gopala Sastry and joint secretary A.V.L. Bhujanga Rao, in a joint statement, said 5,300 cusecs of flood water of Mehadrigedda could not be led like a "lamb" through a 140-metre-wide channel on the "lion" sea tide of 1.8 mt height which would obstruct the flow and cause backwaters and inundation. `Build reservoirs' "The flood banks may settle and breach as the soil is weak." Charging that the authorities had not heeded the advice of the VCEC, they said instead of wasting land for two channels and throwing water in to the sea, two small reservoirs could be constructed to store floodwater. The water could be purified and then diverted to the GVMC water mains. "If one sees the Amsterdam airport which is 4 mt below sea level better ideas can surface," they said.> http://www.thehindu.com/2007/05/20/stories/2007052014240300.htm This is the airport on which Rs 200 crores have reportedly been spent, 3/4th of it by the Navy itself. Seems like it is frantically trying to develop a core competence in airport development and operation! The people of A.P. and travellers to it are the guinea pigs in this case. Its funny but Dabolim is still in limbo as far as 24x7 operation is concerned. Why? Thankfully it does not have a flooding problem as well like Vizag. P.S. The Navy has at least 5 airports to monkey around with (Dabolim, Kochi, Vizag, Arrakonam {near Chennai} and soon Karwar). _________________________________________________________________ Catch the complete World Cup coverage with MSN http://content.msn.co.in/Sports/Cricket/Default.aspx ------------------------------------------------------- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era.
