Hi Joe,

This is nothing new. I'm not sure how the tax system works in Goa but
in Canada, churches are considered 'charitable institutions' and as
such are exempt from paying tax on their income. The government is
losing billions in lost revenue and indirectly, the general taxpayer
is supporting these so called 'religious charitable institutions'.
However, one of the caveats is that they too, as the Archbishop of Goa
has directed his clergy, refrain from promoting political agendas from
the pulpit.

This did not stop the overt promotion of the Conservative party during
the last elections. At that time, the issue was regarding same-sex
marriages, which despite threats of eternal damnation, was passed
provincially and federally. This year we are going to have an
election and public funding of religious education is bound to be an
issue that will, in all probability, be fought from every pulpit. It
was a direct threat from the Bishop in power at the time, 20 years
ago, to the then Premier of Ontario, Bill Davis, that he would lose
the Catholic vote if full funding was not extended to all four years
of high school. We are all living to regret the cowardly decision
made as a result of that threat.

Public education should be secular. Religious indoctrination of
children should be banned as a form of child abuse. The duplication
of expenses to maintain a separate school system with the incumbent
expenses of transportation and facility maintenance is stressing
budgets to the point of cutting essential programs.

Welcome to the dark side of religion.
