http://oheraldo.in/node/24933 Mortal combat for Salcete veterans BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, MAY 23 — It's no easy going for Salcete's heavyweights and political veterans of many a political battle as they slog it out to keep the opposition at bay in their bastion ahead the June 2 polls. Be it Speaker Francisco Sardinha in Curtorim, Luizinho Faleiro and Churchill Alemao in Navelim, Alexio Sequeira (Loutolim), Digambar Kamat (Margao) and Filipe Neri Rodrigues in Velim, these political stalwarts are facing a tough battle in their respective constituencies. As things indicate, none of these heavyweights can afford to leave their constituencies and canvass for party candidates in other areas. The two 6-time MLAs —Sardinha and Faleiro — are facing the toughest political battle in their political career spanning over two and half decades. Three-time MLAs — Alexio Sequeira and Digambar Kamat — along with two-time MLA Filipe Neri, also appear feeling the heat. Incidentally, these Congress veterans are facing a stiff challenge from the Save Goa Front in four constituencies. Curtorim is witnessing a ding-dong battle between Sardinha and outgoing Curtorim block Congress president, Reginaldo Lourenco. In Navelim, Industries Minister Luizinho Faleiro is facing the toughest ever political battle in his 27-year old political career, having even once elected unopposed in the 1989 polls. Challenged by his bete noire, Churchill Alemao, entire Navelim constituency is feeling the heat of a strident campaign by these two heavyweights, with fluctuating fortunes only increasing the suspense with each passing day. In Loutolim, sitting MLA Alexio Sequeira is locked in a triangular contest between Save Goa Front Remy Fernandes and Independent Pausilipo Dourado. Many say a straight fight would have made matters more difficult for the three-time MLA, even as the constituency is witnessing a close battle — perhaps for the first time in the last three elections. Elsewhere too, the situation is no different. Two-time Velim MLA, Filipe Neri Rodrigues is locked in a straight fight with Save Goa Front candidate Benjamin D'Silva, while Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao is facing a challenge from UGDP nominee, Dr Jorson Fernandes in Cuncolim. -- DEV BOREM KORUM.
