<Kobe Steel is negotiating with Chowgule toconstruct a steel mill with
annual capacity of 500,000tons, Shigeyoshi Tanaka, a Kobe spokesman, said
todayby phone. Chowgule will operate themill using Kobe Steel technology to
reduce rawmaterials costs, Tanaka said,> [Mervyn Lobo]

This is a 'boutique' of a steel mill. India's total annual production is of
the order of 40 million tonnes. The Japanes are not only masters of
miniaturisation (a la walkmans and digital cameras) but they are also able
to breakeven at smaller scales than conventional plants. The Japanese are
also highly committed to environmental conservation in industrialisation.
All in all, it should be a good deal for Goa and I hope it goes through OK.
I heard recently that Nokia wanted to come to Goa bit was somehow diverted
to Tamil Nadu. This kind of lost opportunity Goa needs like a hole in the
head.
