Wealth taxes are gaining popularity around the world. For instance, in
France, there is a "solidarity tax on wealth" on individuals who have a net
worth of more than 800,000 euros. In Argentina, wealth is taxed above just
$53,500 in U.S. dollars. And other countries are joining the ranks, including
Switzerland, Norway, Italy and Spain. You can only imagine what a burden this
is. People hide assets... underdeclare their wealth... find fancy
loopholes... and pay top dollar to tax accountants. But will it ever come to
the U.S.? It's certainly possible. After all, many politicians have
promised to "go where the money is," and American households have a record
$90.2 trillion in wealth. But there is one key thing that's holding the
