http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20070013631# The role of the church in Goa politics NDTV Correspondent Monday, May 28, 2007 (Panaji) It is well known for long that the church has backed the Congress party by exhorting Catholics to unite to keep out communal forces or the BJP. The church strongly backed the anti-regional plan protests which some in the clergy feared would benefit the BJP. Those divisions that remained silent have now surfaced during election time. Some have strongly come out in the Congress's support, like father Concessaio, who has blessed the offices of a congress candidate ''If a pujari of a temple can go and bless why can't a priest. I am a priest and can go anywhere,'' father Conceceicao Silva of Mandur parish. But others in the church say they won't budge from what they call a more politically mature stand. Father Maverick Fernandes of the Council for Social Justice and Peace asks, ''why do you need the Congress or the BJP there are several options why not look for other options''. But many say that the collapse of these old loyalties is inevitable in a new Goa where cash rich politicians are defined less by faith and ideology and more by profit. -- DEV BOREM KORUM. Gabe Menezes. London, England Comment: I saw this short clip last night on the T.V. It is abundantly clear that, People's disgust with Congress is very evident. Hopefully the voters will make the correct choice and show the door to the long established corrupt ones, there is no need to kick out the Congress en block. Similarly the voters could elect the MLA's who have performed, irrespective of their Party. Also the voters should give new faces a chance. Rev. Fr. Conceceicao Silva of Mandur parish, is being disingenuous; he conveniently forgot that he also urged the People to vote for Congress ! A priest who is a tricky dicky, needs to be sent to Gujarat by the Archbishop, sooner than later! ------------------------------------------------------- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era.
