The fact is India is not known for producing distinguished statesmen like Lee
Kwan Yu (Singapore) or Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam).Indian leaders or high officials
tend to be:
- pompous mediocrities with a king-size ego; intellectual lightweights, bereft
of ideas,

- no brilliance, creativity,or grand vision

- lacking social graces, village bumpkins atheart
- humourless, unsubtle; unable to relate to minorities- lacking vitality, at
public events, poor diction & delivery

It is true that Dr Kalam had some distinction but surely Pranab Mukerjhee was a
joke. Was he presidential material?  What did he achieve? [In 2009, US Sec of
State Hilary Clinton objected to Mukerjee being made finance Minister instead
of Montek Ahluwalia. It was none of her business but she offered her opinion.]
President Pratiba Patil was another joke. Her husband was indicted in a land
grab case in Feb 2010She was an utter simpleton, a monument to banality.  Some
of her views:
-  dowry is a curse, that's why girls get killed; killing female infants will
disturb male-female ratio
- 'If there are no girls, there will not be anymothers, sisters, wives and
daughters to take humanity forward'.(October 2010);.
- through virtuous living, goodness will come to the world  [Aug2010]
So will the new candidate Ram Govind be any more distinguished??

Vajpayee gave us Dr A.P. J Kalam, an articulate figure and a towering
personality who inspired all during his tenure in office and outside it.
Then came Pratibha Patil who nobody knew much, except the Gandhi Family who
rewarded her with this prestigious honour for being a loyalist. She came
and went without making too much of a difference. Now we have Pranab
Mukherjee. No doubt a good popular choice and a highly respectable person
in all political circles. And the NDA have just announced the name of Ram
Nath Kovind as their Presidential candidate. Who’s he? A political
appointee and a Governor of Bihar. That's all we know so far. A
Presidential candidate should ideally have been a person with good
leadership qualities, who could inspire the young generation and who has a
futuristic vision for the Country. Has the NDA, which has the numbers,
missed a golden opportunity to give us such a President? We will have to
wait and watch.
