Edgar Valles, president of Lisbon-based Casa de Goa, an association of overseas Goans, presented the issues which were discussed at the recently-concluded international conference on 'Sustainable development of Goa in the 21st century'. Tourism is becoming a major threat to the quality of life for certain segments of the population. "Deforestation, good quality agricultural land declassification, absence of sustainable waste disposal practices all the way to access impediments to the permanent residents of Goa (for instance, to public beaches) are among unsustainable practices that are incumbent on authorities to thwart," states one of the conclusions. The association suggests working with Portgual, which has experience in controlling the negative impact of mass tourism and promoting promising modes such as agro-tourism.
